Happy 2013!
With a new year comes new journeys to embark upon; why not blog them? My.thoughts.exactly.
Two weeks ago, my friend SJS and I decided we would be glamorous New Yorkers and lock down a few Ultra VIP tables at some super hip lounge and ring in the new year. He had just moved here 2 months ago making this his first NYC NYE and we both had a few friends coming in from out of town so this celebration had to be EPIC, no excuses.
Turns out, our out of town friends were broken/sick/low on funds so they wouldn't be coming out anymore. And, annoyingly, the other people in our NYE email chain had yet to respond with their preferences! (This is one of my biggest pet peeves. I mean, what good is an email chain if no one pipes up?!)
By noon on the day of, we still had no plans set in stone but I wasn't too worried (ok, maybe I was a little worried and MAYBE I was looking up flights for a last minute back-up plan. maybe) whatever we end up doing, I was confident that we'd still have a great time.
We wanted to grab dinner somewhere nice, so I had suggested Barbounia, this Mediterranean spot in Gramercy. I had been there for drinks before and had been meaning to try it for dinner. It was the perfect choice - everything was ideal.
They weren't taking reservations, but we were able to nab a table easily once we were there. I ordered their signature cocktail with the jalepeño infused tequila - a must-try if you like spicy drinks. For dinner, I had the branzino from the regular menu and the others ordered the black sea bass from Barbounia's special NYE menu which we washed down with a bottle of bubbly! Absolutely NO complaints from any of us; place was beautiful, service was amazing, food was delicious, and everyone there was cool and gorgeous.
We followed up dinner by meeting my friend, Julia, and her family at the Beekman Hotel's rooftop bar for the countdown. INCREDIBLE NYC VIEWS and a bottle of champagne for $40?! best.decision.ever.
After that, we hopped in a cab and made our way down to the East Village where we jumped around to a few different spots just like it were any other NYC night. Oh, it's new years eve? No big deal.
Any other year, single me would feel lonely without having someone to celebrate the night with and would make sure to find someone by the time the clock strikes 12. This year, I promised myself I wouldn't get too drunk and unintentionally be attached to anyone. No kiss, just great times with some great people. That, my friends, is what I consider SUCCESS.
If 2013 is any kind of reflection of how I spent my NYE, it is going to be one great year of personal growth.
